The Cape-class (and the subsequent Evolved Cape-class) patrol boats are highly versatile aluminum monohulls designed to bridge the gap between traditional border force cutters and naval warships. Initially built for the Australian Border Force by Austal, the Royal Australian Navy later adopted the "Evolved" variant to augment its fleet during the transition away from the Armidale-class. These vessels are optimized for 28-day patrols and feature enhanced medical and surveillance facilities, along with two Gemini RHIBs for rapid boarding operations. Their role is central to Australia’s civil maritime security, performing constant surveillance to prevent unauthorized entry and illegal activity within the nation's exclusive economic zone.
