The Armidale-class patrol boats were developed to provide a high-tempo intercept and surveillance capability, replacing the aging Fremantle-class. Built by Austal Ships in Western Australia, the class features an all-aluminum hull designed to balance speed and fuel efficiency while operating in the harsh conditions of Australia’s northern waters. Though primary tasked with border protection and fisheries oversight under Operation Resolute, the vessels are equipped with a stabilized 25mm Rafael Typhoon gun and advanced communication suites to integrate with wider ADF networks. As the class reaches the end of its intended 15-year service life, it is gradually being phased out in favor of larger and more habitable platforms.
